Colombian featherweight Jose Carmona is in stable condition at a hospital in Mexico following two brain surgeries to repair damage received during Saturday’s eighth-round stoppage loss to Jorge Arce, who floored Carmona twice during their fight in San Luis Potoni, according to Zanfer Promotions matchmaker Sean Gibbons.

Although Gibbons was not physically present during the bout, he told RingTV.com that he received a full report from his colleague, Zanfer Promotions president Fernando Beltran, regarding Carmona’s condition.

“He was taken right from the ring. The doctors were right on him. They iced his body down, literally, before he got to the hospital. They did the surgery, and the fighter is in stable condition right now,” said Gibbons on Monday.

“Fernando called me yesterday and was very encouraged that the guy was okay for now. … they got to him right after the fight and he was on that operating table within an hour of the fight.”

Carmona was not named as an opponent for Arce until Tuesday of last week, as an alternative to Giovani Caro, who was himself intended to be a replacement for William Prado, who pulled out following a motorcycle accident, according to Gibbons.

The fight was Arce’s first since being knocked out by Nonito Donaire in December.
