The middleweight bout between two-time world title challenger Martin Murray and Australia’s Garth Wood, due to take place in Sydney on Dec. 11, is in danger of being called off, according to aus-boxing.com.

Fidel Tukel, the bout promoter, has hinted that ticket sales for the event will suffer due to the Shane Mosley vs. Anthony Mundine fight being rescheduled to Nov. 27.

That would leave only two weeks between shows and with Mundine, a home favorite, and Mosley, a boxing legend, due to meet in the same city, one can see why this would be detrimental for business.

Murray, THE RING No. 6 at 160 pounds, was awarded a draw against then-WBA middleweight titlist Felix Sturm in December 2011, and positively established himself on the world scene with a terrific performance.

Still, in April of this year the British star was considered cannon fodder for WBC titleholder and RING champion Sergio Martinez, who was thought to be levels above. Defying the odds, Murray decked the Argentinian great in Round 8, and pushed him to the wire in a closely contested battle.

The judges preferred the home fighter’s work and awarded Martinez a unanimous decision.

If the Wood bout is canceled then it may not be the end of the world for Murray, who still holds the No. 1 position with the WBA. That puts him in line for a third championship shot against unbeaten power puncher Gennady Golovkin.
