Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and three-division titlewinner Shane Mosley said in a prepared statement on Monday that an Oct. 23 bout between Mosley and 154-pound rival Anthony Mundine is off, citing a breach of contract by Mundine’s promoter, Vlad Warton, of Millennium Events.
“I’m very disappointed with this turn of events, because I was planning on making a big statement by beating Mundine,” said Mosley. “But I was left with no choice but to withdraw. The fans in Australia have welcomed me with open arms, and I hope to return to fight for them one day in better circumstances.”
Warton did not return phone calls from RingTV.com inquiring about the fight, which was slated for the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Australia.
“It’s unfortunate that this fight will not be taking place, and we apologize to all of Shane’s Australian fans,” said Schaefer, “but there are contracts in place for a reason, and when the terms are not adhered to, we have no choice but to protect our fighter, and that’s what happened here.”
An earlier story on RingTV.com reported that the bout was close to being canceled due to a combination of profit disputes and lagging ticket sales.
Mosley (47-8-1, 39 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Mexico’s Pablo Cesar Cano in May, but was 0-3-1 in his last four heading into the bout, with losses against Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., and a draw with Sergio Mora.
Mundine (44-5, 26 KOs), 38, was last in the ring in January, when he lost by unanimous decision in a rematch with IBF middleweight titleholder Daniel Geale, whom he’d beaten by a controversial split decision in 2009.
Among Mosley’s career-highs are a pair of victories over Oscar De La Hoya, two consecutive knockouts over Fernando Vargas, and stoppage wins over Antonio Margarito and Ricardo Mayorga. Mosley also has triumphed over world titleholders Jesse James Leija, John John Molina, Phillip Holiday and Luis Collazo, knocking out Leija and Molina in lightweight title bouts.
