Lem’s latest: Cotto-Rodriguez draws more than 1.5 million viewers

According to Nielsen Media Research, three-division titlewinner Miguel Cotto’s third-round knockout of junior middleweight rival Delvin Rodriguez on HBO from the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, drew 1,555,000 viewers, surpassing the previous weekend’s 1,416,000 for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s controversial unanimous decision over Bryan Vera the top performing cable fight of 2013.

Cotto (38-4, 31 knockouts), who turns 33 on Oct. 29, had lost his past two bouts by unanimous decision against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout. Cotto’s last victory was in December of 2011, a 10th-round stoppage of Antonio Margarito.

A 33-year-old resident of Danbury, Conn., Rodriguez (28-7-3, 16 KOs) had won two straight by knockout since falling to Trout. Rodriguez was coming off consecutive stoppages of previously unbeaten George Tahdooahnippah in the sixth round, and Freddy Hernandez in the eighth.



 

MIKE ALVARADO, TOP RANK TO DONATE TO COLORADO DISASTER RELIEF

WBO 140-pound beltholder Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs), and his promoter, Top Rank, have pledged $1.00 for  every ticket sold his Oct. 19 defense against Siberian Ruslan Provodnikov to The Salvation Army for its emergency disaster services serving Colorado, Top Rank announced on Tuesday.

“Colorado boxing fans have been so supportive of me throughout my entire career,” said Alvarado, who will face Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs) at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colo., a suburb of Denver, near Alvardo’s hometown of Thornton. “I am only too happy to support the people of my state in their time of need. We all need to do our part.”

 

ARTURO GATTI-MICKY WARD DOCUMENTARY AIRS ON OCT. 19

HBO’s debut of the Legendary Nights documentary based on the Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward trilogy will be broadcast at midnight ET/PT on Oct. 19, followed at 1:15 a.m. ET/PT by HBO’s 2 Days featuring featherweight champion Mikey Garcia in advance of Garcia’s fight with WBO junior lightweight beltholder Roman “Rocky” Martinez as part of a Nov. 9 tripleheader to include Nonito Donaire‘s featherweight debut in a rematch with Vic Darchynian.

The night of boxing will begin with the 9:45 p.m. ET/PT airing of Alvarado-Provodnikov.
