An exciting weekend of boxing produced the following results, some of which affected THE RING’s divisional rankings and championships.

At cruiserweight, Denton Daley scored a 10-round decision over Frenchman Jean-Marc Monrose. Troy Ross has been inactive for a year and is being dropped from the rankings. Ilunga Makuba moves up to No. 7; Firat Arslan moves up to No. 8; Dmytro Kucher moves up to No. 9 and Thabiso Mchunu, fresh off of his win over Eddie Chambers, will come in at No. 10.

At super middleweight, unbeaten prospect Badou Jack and recent title challenger Marco Antonio Periban fought to a 10-round draw last Thursday night. No changes in the rankings.

At middleweight, undefeated prospect Chris Eubank, Jr. scored a third-round stoppage over Alexey Ribchev. Eubank is now 11-0 with 6 knockouts. Former welterweight beltholder Joshua Clottey won a 10-round decision over durable journeyman Dashon Johnson after a near two year layoff. He is expected to fight at junior middleweight going forward.  No change.

At junior middleweight, Floyd Mayweather dominated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to become THE RING junior middleweight champion. Alvarez drops down to our No. 1-rated junior middleweight, the ranking formerly held by Mayweather. Most observers to the fight felt it was a unanimous decision for Mayweather but judge C.J. Ross saw it controversially different by scoring it a draw, 114-114, making the official verdict a majority decision for Mayweather. Ishe Smith lost his IBF 154-pound title by a split decision to Carlos Molina, who will remain No. 6 in the ratings while Smith drops from No. 8 to No. 10 with Demetrius Andrade and Willie Nelson moving up one spot each.

At welterweight, Shawn Porter scored a unanimous decision over Julio Diaz. No changes.

At junior welterweight, Danny Garcia retained THE RING championship by defeating Lucas Matthysse by close unanimous decision. Garcia was very impressive and showed he deserves to be our champion. Matthysse fought most of the fight with s swollen closed right eye. Matthysse will retain his No. 1 ranking.  Pablo Cesar Cano won a split decision over Ashley Theophane at a 142-pound catch weight. Cano clearly deserved the decision.

At featherweight, Logan McGuinness won a unanimous 12-round decision over Argentinean Sergio Carlos Santillan to maintain his unbeaten run. No changes.

At junior featherweight, Kid Galahad scored a career best win stopping unbeaten Jazza Dickens in 10 to win the British title. No changes.

At bantamweight, Malcolm Tunacao returned from his WBC title loss to Shinsuke Yamanaka for the first time winning a 5-round technical decision over Imron Lookkhlongtan. No changes.

At junior flyweight, Kazuto Ioka stopped Thailand’s Kwanthai Sithmorseng in seven to retain his WBA title. No changes.

At strawweight, Ryo Miyazaki eked out a razor-thin majority decision over Mexico’s Jesus Silvestre to retain his WBA title.

Pound for Pound: Some members on the ratings committee recommended that Alvarez be dropped from the pound-for-pound ratings and be replaced by Carl Froch entering at No. 10. However, with Mayweather firmly established at No. 1 and Andre Ward, Wladimir Klitschko, Manny Pacquiao, Adrien Broner and other pound-for-pound rated fighters scheduled for upcoming fights in the next few months, I cannot add Froch to the list at this time since his last fight was in May and he has a fight scheduled for Nov. 23 against George Groves. Evaluations and/or revisions will be addressed after each of the current P4P rated fighters’ bouts. But Froch cannot be added with his next fight scheduled only two months away. No changes this week.
