LAS VEGAS – Pablo Cesar Cano seemed to dominate Ashley Theophane but had to settle for a split-decision victory in a 10-round welterweight fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Canelo Alvarez undercard Saturday at the MGM Grand.

The scores were 98-92 and 97-93 for Cano, 96-94 for Theophane. Judge Ricardo Ocasio somehow scored it for Theophane.

Cano (27-3-1, 20 knockouts) took it to Theophane (33-6-1, 10 KOs) from the beginning, landing hard, accurate punches throughout and staggering the Englishman a number of times. Theophane, whose nose was bloodied, had his moments but didn’t have the punching power to keep Cano off of him. He barely survived the 10 rounds.

Cano, from Mexico, lost his previous two fights – decisions against Paulie Malignaggi and Shane Mosley – but acquitted himself well in both fights.

Theophane, a former British titleholder prot├®g├® of Mayweather, had won his two previous fights.

A full undercard report will follow shortly.
