ABNER MARES-JHONNY GONZALEZ, ADRIEN BRONER-MARCOS MAIDANA ON DEC. 14?

Three-division titlewinner Abner Mares, in town for the Mayweather-Alvarez fight, said that a rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez is being considered for a Dec. 14 Showtime Pay Per View card that could be headlined by WBA welterweight beltholder Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana.

Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs) lost by shocking first-round knockout loss to Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KOs) that dethroned him as WBC featherweight titleholder last month. Mares first informed RingTV.com of his desire for a return bout with Gonzalez, who has scored knockouts in 13 of his past 15 victories.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer informed RingTV.com on Tuesday that Dec. 14 was the potential pay per view date for Broner-Maidana, and said of Gonzalez-Mares II that he hoped to “get that fight done somewhere in November-December.”

“I asked for the rematch right after my last fight happened. Two days later, I called Richard Schaefer and I told him, ‘Richard, I want my rematch. I saw the fight and I felt there was no fight,” said Mares.

“I owe it to my people, because, literally, there was no fight. It ended in the first round. We’re in a waiting period. Waiting to see if Jhonny’s okay with the contract and then, we’ll take it from there.”
