The British and world boxing fraternity has been rocked to its very foundations by the sudden passing of premier UK matchmaker, Dean Powell. The cause of his death is unknown at this time.

Powell lived and breathed the sport of boxing for over 25 years and was a matchmaker for Frank Warren when the likes of Nigel Benn, Frank Bruno, Ricky Hatton, Prince Naseem Hamed and Joe Calzaghe were at the peak of their powers.

He also worked with Lennox Lewis and Emanuel Steward and a full list of boxing luminaries who respected the wisdom and experience of this immensely popular man is literally too long to list.

It would be unfair to pigeon hole Powell as a matchmaker because his work ethic was matched only by his versatility within the sport he loved.

He functioned equally well as a trainer and manager and the outpouring of sympathy and condolences reflect the mark that Dean Powell made on the sport across three decades.

The following press release was issued by Queensberry Promotions just after 4:00 p.m. (British time) today.

“All of us are deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of our very close friend and colleague, Dean Powell.  Dean was a valued and popular member of our team and within the sport of boxing and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones for their tragic loss.”

The staff of RingTV.com extend their thoughts and prayers to all of Powell’s family and friends.
