During a Thursday conference call announcing his Aug. 3 middleweight clash with Saul Roman, hard-hitting, former super middleweight Curtis “Showtime” Stevens named WBA 160-pound titleholder Gennady Golovkin as the man he would most like to face if he gets beyond Roman.

Stevens drew a response on Friday from Tom Loeffler, of K2 Promotions, which handles Golovkin (27-0, 24 knockouts), who said that Stevens (24-3, 17 KOs) “might get his wish.”

Stevens had said that Golovkin would be the most enticing of the division’s beltholders, choosing him over RING and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, as well as IBF and WBO counterparts Daniel Geale and Peter Quillin.

“If it was up to me, I would take Gennady Golovkin out, you know? They’re saying that he’s the most feared middleweight, but I’m calling him out. People are scared to fight him, but I’m asking to fight him. His trainer, though, is saying I’m not ready. I don’t know how I’m not ready if I’m asking to fight,” said Stevens, who will face Roman (37-9, 31 KOs) in an event to be televised on NBC Sports.

“[Golovkin’s trainer] Abel Sanchez, he’s smart. He knows not to put Gennady Golovkin in there with me, because he’s going to get his first loss ever in his career, and he’s going to get knocked out with that loss. From what I have seen, Gennady likes to fight, and I like to fight, too. He’s a power-puncher and I’m a power-puncher. Why not? I’m strong, I have a lot of knockouts and I have one-punch knockout power.”

Golovkin is coming off of his 14th-straight knockout last month against Matthew Macklin, whom Martinez stopped in March of last year.

“If Stevens wins on August 3, he might get his wish, as we are planning the next fights for GGG,” said Loeffler. “I have a feeling his bark is louder than his bite if he is really offered a shot at the most feared middleweight champion. If he wins, GGG would have no problem fighting him, since Stevens said he is digging a grave for him.”

Also on the card with Stevens, heavyweight “Fast” Eddie Chambers (36-3, 18 KOs) meets Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (13-1, 10 KOs), and heavyweight Tomasz Adamek (48-2, 29 KOs) faces Dominick Guinn (34-9-1, 23 KOs).
