The proposed Oct. 5 fight between Miguel Cotto and Delvin Rodriguez has essentially been agreed to by both sides, according to Rodriguez’s manager A.J. Galante.

“Delvin’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia, and I, have an agreement in principle with Cotto’s people,” Galante told RingTV.com on Wednesday evening.

“We are working on finalizing the documents. It’s not 100 percent, but I would be surprised if it’s not done by the weekend. But I stress that it is not 100 percent done yet.”

The fight would take place somewhere in Florida and would be televised by HBO.

The 33-year-old Rodriguez is coming off back-to-back ESPN2 Friday Night Fights headlining wins in 2013 following a Showtime-televised defeat to Austin Trout in a 154-pound title challenge last June.

Cotto, on the other hand, is coming off back-to-back defeats, first to Floyd Mayweather in May 2012 and then to Trout last December, both losses coming by unanimous decision.

The 32-year-old Cotto hasn’t won since gaining revenge against Antonio Margarito in their December 2011 rematch. Margarito was unable to come out after the ninth round due to grotesque swelling around his right eye. The win helped erase memories of Cotto’s first career loss, a July 2008 beating that resulted in a 10^th-round TKO.

Margarito later was caught trying to use loaded wraps against Shane Mosley in his next fight, drawing into question previous Margarito bouts, the Cotto fight in particular.
