Robert Guerrero pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and gun charges were dropped Tuesday in connection with his arrest for attempting to bring a firearm onto a plane March 28 at Kennedy International Airport in New York City, a spokesperson with the New York State District Attorney’s office said.

Guerrero was fined $250 dollars and ordered to serve 50 hours of community service in his home state of California. He also was required to surrender the gun, which will not be returned to him.

The boxer originally faced felony charges that carried a maximum sentence of four years in prison for presenting a locked gun box – complete with gun – to a ticket agent during check-in, the Associated Press reported.

“This is consistent with our office’s policy because he voluntarily disclosed it at the airport – he said he had a weapon – and the gun was legal in his home state,” Helen Peterson, spokesperson for Queen’s District Attorney Richard Brown, told RingTV.com.

Guerrero was gratified that the matter was resolved.

“I’m pleased that the District Attorney’s Office considered my case carefully and resolved it fairly,” he said. “I never intended to violate New York law, but I know that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Lesson learned.  I’m happy this incident is behind me and looking forward to returning to the ring as well as serving my community as ordered by the court.”

Said Richard Schaefer, Guerrero’s promoter: “I am happy for Robert that this situation is resolved,” said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. “As I stated before, it was an honest mistake and there was not ill will behind it.”

Guerrero appeared Tuesday at the New York Supreme Court for Queens County.
