Junior welterweight fringe contender Mauricio Herrera will face lightweight slugger Ji-Hoon Kim in the main event to a special Thursday edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on May 2, the show’s promoters Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions announced on Wednesday.

The scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout will top a card held at The Omega Products International, located in Corona, Calif.

Herrera (18-3, 7 knockouts), of Riverside, Calif., is looking to rebound from a decision loss to unbeaten Karim Mayfield last October. The hardnosed technician has victories against recent welterweight title challenger Ruslan Provodnikov, current IBF-ranked 140-pound standout Cleotis Pendarvis, and former prospect Mike Dallas Jr. His other losses are a competitive decision to junior welterweight contender Mike Alvarado and a controversial nod to former 130-pound beltholder Mike Anchondo.

Kim (24-8, 18 KOs), of Goyang City, South Korea, is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision defeat to world ranked Ray Beltran last December. Kim knocked Beltran down in the first round of that ESPN2-televsied bout. Kim, who turned pro at 17, dropped a unanimous decision to Miguel Vazquez for the vacant IBF lightweight world title, but he has impressive victories over former world title challenger Kobo Gogaladze, Yakubu Amidu (20-2-1) and previously undefeated Alisher Rahimov (23-0).

In the co-featured bout to Herrera-Kim, former WBA lightweight beltholder Miguel Acosta will take on Miguel Gonzalez in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds.
