Rodriguez gets past Maderna in ugly fight
Edwin Rodriguez defeated Argentine Ezequiel Maderna by a unanimous decision in a 10-round super middleweight fight on the Gennady Golovkin-Nobuhiro Ishida card Saturday in Monaco.
Rodriguez (23-0, 15 knockouts) didn’t turn in a pretty performance – throwing wild punches much of the fight – but clearly outworked Maderna (19-1, 13 KOs) to win 96-92, 96-92 and 95-92.
Rodriguez lost two points – one for a low blow and another for punching behind the head – but put Maderna down in the ninth round.
With the win, Rodriguez became one of the finalists of a four-man mini-tournament, and will fight Denis Grachev next on July 13 in Monte Carlo. The two of them will share a $1 million purse with a 60-40 split. Grachev outpointed Zsolt Erdei on the same card Saturday.
