WBA junior middleweight beltholder Austin Trout was arrested, jailed and released uncharged “within hours” from El Paso County Jail on Tuesday, the fighter’s promoter, Greg Cohen, confirmed to RingTV.com on Wednesday.

Trout could not be reached for an immediate comment on an apparent arrest for public intoxication that was first reported by The El Paso Times.

According to The El Paso Times, several officers were dispatched to the Taco Cabana restaurant at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in response to a fight.

Trout was arrested about 4:30 a.m., booked at 8:50 a.m. and released approximately two hours later after posting a $105 bond.

An officer noticed “the strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emanating from” those arrested, including Trout, who allegedly displayed “slurred speech and unsteady balance,” according to The El Paso Times.

“Austin was out with his fiancee and friends on New Years Eve, and they went to a taco place late at night to grab a bite to eat, and some women in the establishment got into some type of altercation, and Austin stood up and said, ‘Hey, ladies, ladies, calm down.’ Austin was arrested and released within hours, was not charged, and is not going to be charged,” said Cohen of Trout (26-0, 14 knockouts), a 27-year-old father of three from Las Cruces, New Mexico.

“The police came and basically arrested many of the people in there. It was the kind of thing where they acted first and asked questions later. But they didn’t charge Austin, and they let Austin go on his merry way. He didn’t do anything. It was a case of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and this is not going any farther than this. It’s over with, so there’s nothing to talk about. It was a total misunderstanding. He’s not charged with anything.”

Trout is coming off a unanimous decision victory over three-division champion Miguel Cotto on Dec. 1, and is being considered for a clash with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs), according to Cohen.

Both Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KOs) have targeted May 4 for their returns at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in addition to each boxer having said that he wants to fight on Sept. 14. The dates fall on the two traditional Mexican holiday weekends — Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.

In the past, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said that he would work on negotiations for a matchup between WBC interim 147-pound beltholder Robert Guerrero and Mayweather, who has also been requested by Alvarez.

“Our team has been in contact with their team, and I’d rather not be specific. There are ongoing discussions, and, hopefully, as the days go by, the discussions will intensify,” said Cohen.

“It’s something that we want, and I believe that it’s something that the public wants, and I’m hopeful that it’s a fight that Team Canelo wants. But I can’t speak for them, I can only speak for us. Over the holidays, nothing has really transpired over the last few days. But I’m hopeful that the first half of January, things will come to a head.”

If Trout is chosen for Alvarez, it would be his first bout in Las Vegas. But that should not be a problem for Trout, whose debut at New York’s Madison Garden ended Cotto’s run of seven victories without a loss at the venue, as well as the Puerto Rican legend’s mark of 9-0 with five knockouts in New York.

Cotto’s domination over rivals at The Garden included four knockouts, including Antonio Margarito and Zab Judah, as well as decisions over Shane Mosley, Joshua Clottey and Paulie Malignaggi.

Schaefer said the Puerto Rican legend could be involved in a June 8 date at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., either as a fighter or as a promoter. Cotto’s contract with Trout did include a rematch clause.
