Former RING junior flyweight champion Giovani Segura and world title challenger Glenn Donaire will meet on Dec. 8 in a crossroads bout with potential title implications.

No venue has been finalized but Donaire says it will likely take place in Mexico, Segura’s birth country and home base of the show’s promoter Prensa Promociones del Pueblo. The fight will be televised on the Mexican network Televisa.

The date will be four days to a year since Segura (28-2-1, 24 knockouts) was last in the ring, when he lost via an eighth-round technical knockout to WBO flyweight titleholder Brian Viloria in the Philippines due to a giant swelling on the side of his head.

Donaire (19-5-1, 10 KOs), of San Leandro, Calif., has been more active, winning twice following a three-year ring absence but is coming off a one-sided defeat to Omar Soto a month ago. Donaire, who is the older brother of current pound-for-pound elite Nonito Donaire Jr., has twice challenged for world titles, dropping decisions to Vic Darchinyan and Ulises Solis.

Regarding the Soto upset, Donaire says he sprained his shoulder three weeks prior to the fight, limiting his training to roadwork for nearly a month.

“I thought it was going to be an easy fight because the guy was really slow, but when I got to the ring I couldn’t let go of my punches,” Donaire tells RingTV.com. “I’m really pissed with myself because for the first time I really underestimated my opponent.”

Donaire, who works as an electrician during the day, said he learned a lesson and won’t make the mistake of entering a fight in a compromised state again.

“When I came home that weekend, my daughter was crying because, since she was a baby, she never seen me with a black eye,” said Donaire.

When asked what he thought of the unorthodox southpaw banger Segura, Donaire says he won’t be overconfident because of his opponent’s recent defeat and inactivity.

“He’s a banger and he’s got power in both hands. You have to really watch out, he’s tough and he’s got a lot of heart. Even though this guy was fighting Brian with a big old swelling on his face, he still fought.

“You can’t really look at a fighter in his last fight because every fight is different. At that time when he fought Brian, he was tired already in the third round so maybe the weather in the Philippines got to him.

“You can’t really say that he’s going to be fighting like that, but I look at Brian’s fight and I could do the same thing, too.”
