Three-time super middleweight titleholder Mikkel Kessler has extended his contract with promoter Sauerland Events through to 2014, the company and the fighter announced on Tuesday.

“I look forward to continuing our successful cooperation,” said Kessler, 33, who joined Sauerland Events in Sept. 2009, starting with a fourth-round stoppage of Gusmyr Perdomo that raised his record to 42-1, with 32 knockouts.

“It has been great to work with Wilfried, Kalle and Nisse Sauerland. I owe it to my fantastic fans to prove myself against the world’s best boxers, and thanks to Team Sauerland, I can do just that. They have big plans for me and that suits me well.”

Kessler (45-2, 34 KOs) has won his past three fights, including the past two by knockouts in the sixth and fourth rounds over Mehdi Bouadla and Allan Green, respectively.

In April of 2010, Kessler dethroned England’s Carl Froch as WBC super middleweight beltholder by unanimous decision in a bloody, all-out battle.

Nicknamed “The Viking Warrior,” the “negotiations are currently under way” for Kessler’s next fight, according to Kalle Sauerland.

“We will now carefully plan the next steps to make sure Mikkel will be remembered as one of the biggest fighters in the history of boxing,” said Kalle Sauerland.

“He already ranks up there with the all-time greats. But in the next fights, he can build his very own legacy. A legacy that will be remembered not just in Denmark, Europe or America, but all over the world. The sky is the limit for the Viking Warrior.”

The win over Froch was part of Showtime’s Super Six World Boxing Classic and took place before Kessler’s partisan fans at MCH Arena in Herning, Denmark.

Although bleeding from the nose slightly, and very badly from a severe cut over his left eye, Kessler also managed to draw blood from Froch’s nose and eye.

Kessler’s triumph over Froch helped him to rebound losing his WBA belt by a one-sided, 11-round technical decision loss to Andre Ward in the first round of the Super Six tournament in Nov. 2009.

Ward’s victory ended a streak of three straight stoppage wins by Kessler, whose previous setback had been at the hands of southpaw Joe Calzaghe by unanimous decision in November of 2007.

“I had a lot of experts in Denmark saying that I couldn’t win over Froch and that I was finished and that my career was finished,” said Kessler after defeating Froch in what represented the Danish fighter’s 11th consecutive title bout. “It is nice to get my old belt back, and to show them that I’m still the champ and I’m ready to fight Ward again.”

In August of 2010, Kessler had to pull out of the Super Six with an eye injury, scuttling a September bout with Green.

Kessler has fought only five times outside his home country, including the losses to Calzaghe and Ward. With the wins over Froch, Bouadla and Green, however, Kessler is 42-0 when fighting in Denmark.

“In the past three years, we have been through a lot inside and outside of the ring,” said Kalle Sauerland. “The excitement of the Super Six tournament, the shocking defeat in Oakland against Andre Ward, the epic comeback victory over previously unbeaten Carl Froch, the injury setbacks, and, last, but not least, the impressive destruction of Allan Green in Copenhagen. All of this has formed a very special bond between us.”
