Former IBF/WBA juniorwelterweight beltholder Amir Khan is targeting a return to the ring on July 7 or 14 in the wake of his canceled rematch with Lamont Peterson, whose positive drug test for a banned substance forced the scuttling of their return bout that was slated for May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.

Having been dethroned by Peterson (30-1-1, 15 knockouts) for the crowns in December by disputed split-decision, Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) met with Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, on Thursday to consider future opponents, dates and venues, Schaefer told RingTV.com.

“We’re looking at July. It would seems like June 30 is not going to work because that is a is a Showtime date, so we’re looking at a July 7 or a July 14 date, which is correct,” said Schaefer.

“We’ll have to see now which date we can get, and we’ll have to look at the venue availability, and so we’re going to be looking at all of that and take it from there. I don’t want to speculate on the venue. We’re working on this now.”

Peterson and Khan contractually agreed to be randomly drug tested by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), whose president and founder is Margaret Goodman, informed Nevada State Athletic Commission director Keith Kizer that his “urine specimen…was collected on March 19,” and that its test results were “consistent with the administration of an anabolic steroid such as testosterone.”
