A bout between Golden Boy Promotions’ junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo and Top Rank Inc.’s Vanes Martirosyan is being discussed as the mandatory WBC eliminator to face titleholder Saul Alvarez, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has informed RingTV.com.

The 21-year-old Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 knockouts) must first get beyond a defense against Alfonso Gomez (23-4-1, 12 KOs) on Sept. 17 at Staples Center in Los Angeles as part of an HBO Pay Per View televised split-site double-header whose main event features Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs) defending his WBC welterweight belt opposite Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KOs) from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Schaefer said that he has been in discussions about matching Angulo (20-1, 17 KOs) against Martirosyan (30-0, 19 KOs) with Top Rank Inc. CEO Bob Arum.

“One of the fights that we’ve been discussing is Angulo against Martirosyan. The WBC has ordered a fight between Angulo and Martirosyan to determine the mandatory for Alvarez,” said Schaefer.

“I’m waiting for Bob Arum to get back to me with the numbers that he needs for Martirosyan so that we can hopefully put that fight together. Martirosyan has always wanted to do the fight. He’s even said that he would have no problem going to Mexico, which is a sentiment that Bob had shared with me as well.”
