RingTV Poll: Fans split on who they think Khan should fight

Those who have voted in the latest RingTV poll believe Amir Khan’s next big fight should be against one of two opponents: the winner of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz fight or Timothy Bradley.

And they’re split almost evenly between those potential matchups, 33.5 percent for the Mayweather-Ortiz winner and 32.8 for Bradley.

Mayweather and Ortiz are scheduled to fight Sept. 17 for Ortiz’s WBC welterweight title, meaning Khan would have to move up from 140 pounds to 147 for that fight.

That would be a tremendous move from a financial perspective: Khan would earn the biggest payday of his career, particularly against Mayweather. From a competitive perspective, Khan would be an underdog against Mayweather – who wouldn’t? – but probably would be given a good chance of beating Ortiz even if Ortiz upsets Mayweather.

Meanwhile, Khan and Bradley appeared to have reached a deal to fight last month to determine the top 140-pounder in the world but Bradley decided against it, leaving Khan to fight (and stop) Zab Judah. Bradley was later sued by his co-promoters, leaving his career at least a temporary mess.

The fans obviously still like the showdown, though. And their reasoning is obvious: It’s not often that the undisputed two best fighters in any division face off in the ring to determine No. 1.

Almost 22 percent (21.6) of those who voted in the poll went different directions.

About half of that group (10.9 percent) said Khan should fight the winner of the Sept. 17 Erik Morales-Lucas Matthysse fight, which will be on the undercard of Mayweather-Ortiz. The guess here is that fans like the idea of Khan facing a legend like Morales.

The other half (10.7) would like to see a rematch between Khan and Maidana, who almost stopped Khan in the 10th round only to lose a unanimous decision in a memorable fight in December.

The rest of the voting was scattered: 4.1 percent for the Andre Berto-Jan Zaveck winner; 4 for Robert Guerrero; 1.5 for Lamont Peterson; 1.2 for Devon Alexander; 1.1 for Kell Brook; and 0.2 for Kevin Mitchell.

Khan is scheduled to fight in December, although he won’t fight the winner of Mayweather-Ortiz or Timothy Bradley then. More likely, he would face Morales, Peterson or someone else.
