Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer spoke to RingTV.com regarding updates on the left shoulder of  Robert Guerrero, the IBF-ordered rematch between bantamweight titleholder Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko, and the future of WBA and IBF junior welterweight beltholder Amir Khan.

Guerrero injured his left shoulder during a sparring session on Wednesday night that forced the cancellation of his 140-pound debut against Marcos Maidana that was to be televised on HBO on Aug. 27.

“The doctors looked at his injury yesterday, and they did not see any broken bones. Guerrero is a the doctor right now getting the MRI done., and I am anticipating being able to hear probably within the next hour or two from his manager, Bob Santos, who is with Robert,” said Schaefer.

“Then, we will see what the outcome is. Based on that, we can begin to determine what happens from there. That will tell us what’s going to happen with Maidana.”

Schaefer also said that he spoke to Don King, Agbeko’s promoter, regarding a Showtime-televised return bout between Mares and Agbeko.

In addition, Schaefer said that Mares-Agbeko II is being targeted for early December.

“I talked to [Don] King and told him the we will do the rematch with Agbeko. I met with Abner yesterday and he is in,” said Schaefer. “We are looking at Dec. 3, and we are checking out venues. It might be in Mexico or maybe California.”

Schaefer did not rule out Khan’s facing the winner of a rescheduled bout between Guerrero and Maidana, the latter of whom lost to Khan in the Fight of The Year in December.

Khan is coming off of last month’s fifth-round stoppage that dethroned Zab Judah as IBF titleholder. Khan, who is slated for a return to the ring on Dec. 10, had called out Guerrero before taking on Judah.

Will Schaefer focus on remaking Guerrero-Maidana? Or could Guerrero move straight into a clash with Khan should he recover from his shoulder injury?

“That’s something that hadn’t really crossed my mind to tell you the truth. So we will just have to see what’s going to happen,” said Schaefer. “That’s something that I would need to discuss with Robert and something that I would need to discuss with Amir Khan as well.”

Khan has also expressed interest in facing the winner of the Erik MoralesLucas Matthysse fight for the WBC’s vacant 140-pound belt. There is also Lamont Peterson, the IBF’s No. 1 contender to that version of Khan’s belts.

“That’s all up to Amir Khan,” said Schaefer. “I’m not sure what his first option would be.”
