The former two-time welterweight titleholder suffered a fractured right orbital bone (eye socket) during the beating he took in losing a 12-round decision to Manny Pacquiao last November.

Margarito had been mentioned as a possible summer opponent for 154-pound beltholder Miguel Cotto, who he stopped in 11 rounds in 2008, but blurry vision, possibly caused by cataracts, has prevented him from returning to training.

"He's supposed to see an eye specialist tomorrow or on Thursday," Margarito's trainer Robert Garcia told RingTV.com on Tuesday. "We sat down recently and had a really good talk. He told me that if the doctor says his vision in the right eye isn't 100 percent after surgery, he'll retire from boxing.

"He really wants to fight again but he said he has to take care of his health first. I was happy to hear that. He made enough money with the Pacquiao fight to retire and live comfortably if he manages his money right."
